When we are haunted by our fears, it feels as if our fear is rooted very deeply within us; as if it has always been a part of us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yet, in most cases, our <a title=\"Anxiety: causes and development of anxiety\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/anxiety-causes-and-development-of-anxiety\/\">fear<\/a> is <a title=\"Anxiety: causes and development of anxiety\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/anxiety-causes-and-development-of-anxiety\/\">learned<\/a>. The causes may lie far back in our past, so that we can hardly remember them. The good thing is: what we once learned, we can unlearn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The objects, things and situations we fear are as numerous as they are varied.<br \/>\n<br class=\"clear\">Anxiety comes in many forms. influence on the &#8220;learning&#8221; of fears. As part of our <a title=\"Fear: How the amygdala controls our fears\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/fear-how-the-amygdala-controls-our-fears\/\">limbic system<\/a> and the center of fear, the brain area also known as the amygdala stores and controls our anxiety behavior. What we are afraid of and how much we are afraid of something is decided by our amygdala, which uses <a title=\"How we learn fear with the help of somatic markers\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/how-we-learn-fear-with-the-help-of-somatic-markers\/\">somatic markers<\/a> to create and control our <a title=\"Somatic markers form our body memory\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/somatic-markers-form-our-body-memory\/\">emotional experience memory<\/a>, especially for our fears.<\/p>\n<h2>How exactly do we learn a specific fear?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to US psychologist <a title=\"Orval Hobart Mowrer on wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orval_Hobart_Mowrer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orval Hobart Mowrer<\/a> &#8216;s 1947 <a title=\"Anxiety: causes and development of anxiety\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/anxiety-causes-and-development-of-anxiety\/\">two-factor theory<\/a>, we learn anxiety in two steps<a title=\"Anxiety: causes and development of anxiety\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/anxiety-causes-and-development-of-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(read more<\/a>). It took about another 60 years until <a title=\"Ant\u00f3nio Dam\u00e1sio on wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ant%C3%B3nio_Dam%C3%A1sio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Damasio<\/a> postulated his <a title=\"Somatic markers form our body memory\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/somatic-markers-form-our-body-memory\/\">theory of somatic markers<\/a>, which functionally complements and refines this explanatory model with results of modern brain research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For example, if we experience a situation that overwhelms us and at the same time we perceive strong stressful and unpleasant sensations (pain, shame, guilt, disgust, etc.), the experience and the accompanying physical arousal are stored in the <a title=\"How we learn fear with the help of somatic markers\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/how-we-learn-fear-with-the-help-of-somatic-markers\/\">body&#8217;s memory<\/a> &#8211; in this case &#8211; as a fear stimulus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The emotional and physical arousal felt by Einst in the process play a very important role in the long term. Somatic markers will make the event <a title=\"How Somatic Markers Influence Our Lives\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/how-somatic-markers-influence-our-lives\/\">emotionally and consequently physically remembered<\/a> with approximately the <a title=\"How Somatic Markers Influence Our Lives\" href=\"https:\/\/remstim.com\/en\/how-somatic-markers-influence-our-lives\/\">same intensity<\/a> even after years in similar situations.
