Stressful perfectionism is characterized by the fact that even acceptable results aren’t enough, minor mistakes cause significant anxiety, and further review brings little reassurance. What matters most is what imperfection means to you. For example, if the thought of submitting work triggers shame or anxiety, this manageable everyday situation can serve as a starting point for EMDR self-coaching : to address the emotional distress underlying the pressure to be perfect.

The presentation is finished. It contains all the essential information, the numbers are correct, and the structure is clear. You could send it off for approval. Instead, you move a chart one slot to the left on slide seven. Then you change a sentence. On your next review, the entire introduction suddenly seems too weak to you.

It’s gotten late. The last hour hasn’t really improved the result. Still, sending it off feels premature. Something might not be quite good enough yet.

Does your job still meet your expectations?

Care is related to the task at hand. An incorrect number must be corrected. A statement that could be misunderstood needs to be rephrased. If the presentation serves as an important basis for others’ decisions, appropriate checks are, of course, a necessary part of the process.

However, a helpful standard can also acknowledge that the requirements have been met. It allows for some leeway between outstanding work and a result that is sufficient for the specific purpose. You can take a mistake seriously without having to dismiss your entire performance because of it.

When you’re under intense pressure to be perfect, you lose sight of this perspective. The bar is increasingly set by whether you can still find any flaws. As soon as you’ve improved one aspect, your eye spots the next. The finish line keeps moving along with it.

What happens after you’ve completed a successful piece of work is particularly revealing. Can you accept it as a success? Or do you immediately think that it was just easy, that you were lucky, or that others haven’t yet noticed the crucial flaw? In that case, even a good result may offer little relief.

An expectation becomes dysfunctional when it consistently holds you back: you waste a disproportionate amount of time, are rarely satisfied, or avoid showing your work at all. The term describes this negative effect. It is not a diagnosis in and of itself.

Pressure to be perfect can manifest in three ways

Even before you begin, the pressure to produce a perfect result is so intense that an imperfect first attempt hardly seems an option. You keep researching, wait for better conditions, or prepare in ever greater detail. The draft from which you could actually learn never materializes.

While you’re working, you judge every draft as if it were the final product. You cross out entire sections before you’ve fully developed the idea behind them. Even a minor flaw makes you feel that everything you’ve accomplished so far is worthless. This can be exhausting, even though you appear very dedicated to others.

The work is already done, but it hasn’t been approved yet. You check the same parts over and over again or tweak details without any clear benefit. Once you submit it, your work will be visible and can be evaluated. As long as you’re still working on it, that moment hasn’t come yet.

You don’t have to identify with all three situations. Sometimes the pressure applies only to a specific area where recognition is particularly important to you. In other tasks, you may very well be pragmatic. So the pressure to be perfect can contribute to putting things off without necessarily explaining every instance of procrastination.

When a small mistake suddenly seems to say a lot about you

When does attention to detail become a means of shielding oneself from scrutiny? One clue lies in the feared consequence. “This number could be misinterpreted” calls for an objective review. “If someone finds a mistake here, I’ll be exposed” links the potential mistake to you personally.

Maybe it’s about shame. Maybe you don’t want to be seen as unreliable or incompetent again. In that case, doing your work as flawlessly as possible is also meant to prevent you from having to experience a certain feeling. This expectation takes on a second purpose that can hardly be fulfilled by better slides alone.

It is precisely this connection between self-evaluation and a stressful reaction that deserves attention. An inner voice saying, “I must not make a mistake,” can sound firm and self-evident. Nevertheless, it remains something other than an objectively justified quality requirement.

Sometimes the difference is physical. At the thought of letting go, you hold your breath or feel a tight pressure in your chest. After another round of checking, the tension eases briefly, even though you haven’t changed anything significant. This may indicate that you’re also trying to calm your unease.

Physical tension alone, however, does not prove perfectionism. Genuine responsibility can rightly cause anxiety. It depends on the context: Is there still a relevant mistake that needs to be addressed, or is the goal to eliminate every conceivable possibility of criticism?

A scene of surrender is more tangible than “all my perfectionism”

When it comes to dealing with emotional stress, the moment right before the presentation is released can be pinpointed quite precisely. You look at the finished presentation, notice a small potential inconsistency, and imagine that someone will criticize you because of it. This involves a specific fear, a feeling, and perhaps a clearly perceptible tension.

A manageable scene like this can serve as a topic for EMDR self-coaching. In the six-step EMDR self-coaching method developed by Thomas Buhl, this reaction is addressed and combined with bilateral stimulation. The goal is to work through the emotional significance of this moment. The professional quality of the presentation is then assessed objectively.

This does not imply that perfectionism as a whole must be treated with EMDR, nor that necessary safeguards should be dispensed with. Self-coaching is appropriate for manageable everyday issues. Pronounced compulsions, severe limitations, or overwhelming memories require professional evaluation or therapeutic support.

For an initial assessment, a personal “good enough” threshold is sufficient: What would indicate in this presentation that it is fulfilling its purpose? If you can name specific criteria that the work already meets, yet it still cannot be submitted, you have identified an important distinction. The next step is figuring out how to deal with this remaining pressure and actually let go.

Distressing perfectionism manifests itself when good
