Naast de diepe en lichte slaapfase is ook de zogenaamde Rapid Eye Movement-slaap van groot belang &#8211; vooral voor ons welzijn. Maar wat maakt deze slaapfase binnen de slaapcyclus zo bijzonder?<\/p>\n<h1>Rapid Eye Movement &#8211; de feiten over REM-slaap<\/h1>\n<p>Het meest typische kenmerk van de REM-slaap ligt in de naam van deze slaapfase zelf. Want REM staat voor Rapid Eye Movement, wat de snelle bewegingen van de ogen onder de oogleden beschrijft. De REM-slaapfase wordt gekenmerkt door verslapping van de spieren, verhoogde bloeddruk en een verhoogde polsslag. De REM-slaap gaat gepaard met een hersengolfactiviteit van 4 tot 8 Hz &#8211; wat aanzienlijk meer is dan tijdens het waken. Het lichaam verkeert tijdens de REM-fase dankbaar in een soort verlammingstoestand om te voorkomen dat de in de droom ervaren bewegingen in het echte leven plaatsvinden. Een <strong>hypnogram<\/strong> (zie fig.1), dat een slaapprofiel van de tijdens de nachtrust bereikte slaapfasen grafisch weergeeft, toont de duur en de volgorde van de afzonderlijke fasen van de snelle oogbeweging. Volgens het hypnogram komen de fasen van de hazenslaap ongeveer 3 tot 5 keer voor tijdens de nachtrust en volgen ze op de fasen van de diepe slaap. Studies en slaapprofielen hebben aangetoond dat de eerste REM-fase ongeveer 2 tot 3 uur na het inslapen optreedt en slechts ongeveer 10 minuten duurt. Uit de analyse van de slaapcyclus bleek daarentegen dat de tweede REM-fase ongeveer tweemaal zo lang duurt. Tegen de ochtend duurt de REM-fase ongeveer een uur. Het is niet ongewoon dat late slapers tot twee uur lang dromen. Bij een slaapduur van 7 uur valt de helft van de droomfasen in de laatste twee uur. Bij volwassenen maakt de snelle oogbewegingsslaap ongeveer 20-25% van de totale slaaptijd uit. Pasgeborenen brengen zelfs meer dan 50% van hun slaap door in de REM-fase. Bij jongere slapers en bij toenemende leeftijd wordt het wakker worden waarschijnlijker, vooral aan het einde van een REM-fase.<\/p>\n<h2>Wat gebeurt er tijdens de REM-fase<\/h2>\n<p>Droomactiviteit kan in elk stadium van de slaap worden waargenomen. Maar hun intensiteit verschilt, soms zeer sterk, in de afzonderlijke fasen. Experimenten met vrijwilligers hebben aangetoond dat dromen het sterkst zijn tijdens de Rapid Eye Movement slaap. Zo konden degenen die tijdens de REM-slaap werden gewekt zich hun dromen zeer goed herinneren. Daarentegen hadden degenen die ontwaakten tijdens een niet-REM fase (NREM slaap) er geen herinnering aan. Rapid eye movement slaap wordt gekenmerkt door zeer intense hersenactiviteit die doet denken aan de waaktoestand.<\/p>\n<h3>Historische achtergrond<\/h3>\n<p>De ontdekking van de REM-fase was pas zo&#8217;n 50 jaar geleden. In het verleden namen wetenschappers aan dat er tijdens de slaap niets gebeurde en dat er dus niets te bestuderen viel. In 1953 hebben de slaaponderzoeker Nathaniel Kleitmann en zijn promovendus Eugene Aserinsky met een onderzoeksteam in een slaaplaboratorium deze opvatting met succes weerlegd. Want dit jaar ontdekten onderzoekers de REM-slaap.
