What is EMDR?
EMDR is the abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is in origin a trauma processing method for psychotherapy. It was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro.
EMDR is considered an effective method for treating stress and strain. After a successful EMDR application, most people feel significantly relieved. Felt beliefs that have a negative influence on the interpretation of the personal life situation are reformulated in a new and positive way. The stress sensations often subside noticeably.
The REMSTIM 3000 uses the important Rapid Eye Movement Stimulation method component of EMDR. In self-coaching, the REMSTIM 3000 can thus be used to reduce stress and the burdens of everyday life. Especially when the cause lies in what has been experienced.
Bilateral hemispheric stimulation of the brain – also called Rapid Eye Movement Stimulation – forms the central element of EMDR. Fast eye movements play a decisive role here. In many cases, this strengthens resources and helps to process stressful experiences that are involved in triggering numerous feelings of stress. According to the adaptive information processing theory model, these stressful experiences are anchored in blocked or incompletely integrated memory networks of the brain.
According to current knowledge, the cause is thought to be some kind of (mis)storage of the relevant memories in the brain. This is because stressful memories are usually processed by the brain’s normal information processing, resolved, and partially stored as valuable experiences without painful residual sensations. REM sleep plays an important role in this process. The strong similarity between bilateral stimulation by rapid eye movements and REM sleep is evident.
EMDR in self-coaching
While EMDR was primarily developed to treat distressing memories in post-traumatic stress disorder, it quickly became apparent that the method could also work for everyday sensitivities in coaching and self-coaching. Especially when the cause lies in what has been experienced. Memories of past events can be the cause of a variety of stresses.
The method of rapid eye movements (arguably) has a neurobiological effect. Exactly how, however, is ultimately not yet known. It is obvious that stressful memories and the associated accompanying symptoms and behavioral patterns are noticeably changed for the better in many cases.
Bilateral stimulation, inherent in the method, obviously activates the self-regulatory system of the brain in case of blockage of the normal mechanisms and thus helps to accelerate the processing of the stressful thoughts. It seems that EMDR dissolves mental and emotional blocks in the brain and integrates the misstored information.
Self-coaching with the REMSTIM 3000 uses visual bilateral stimulation (Rapid Eye Movement Stimulation). But unlike the use of EMDR in therapy by a therapist, the goal of the self-coaching method is to quickly and noticeably reduce performance stress and increase creativity, mental fitness, and conflict stability.
The self-coaching method with the help of the REMSTIM 3000 is understood as performance-enhancing mental training. It is not a diagnostic procedure, medical therapy or other healing, does not treat diseases or symptoms of diseases. No promises of a cure are made, so that false hopes are raised in the user. A prerequisite for self-coaching is – as is usually the case with coaching – a normal mental and physical resilience. (Read also the important information)
